Jacobsen Trainee of the Year Competiton 2013

On an absolutely brilliant day at the Pakuranga Country Club, 4 of New Zealand’s up and coming turf trainees pitted themselves against each other and one last final day of exams for the right to win the Jacobsen / Power Turf Trainee of the year award.  Tyler Otney (Westown Golf Club), Tony Wood
(North Shore Golf Club), Luke Burton (Kauri Cliffs)  & Nick Brown (Royal Wellington Golf Club) were put through their paces
on the 7th of May by Ian Higgins (who replaced Steve Hodgson due to a conflict of interest with Tyler Otney),
Gordon Trembath representing
NZGCSA and Terry Sullivan from
Power Turf New Zealand.

Mr. Sullivan commented that “ This years
competition was very evenly
contested and finding the overall winner
proved tough for the judges, which
in itself is a very positive reflection of
the participants.”

Jacobsen and Power Turf New Zealand have been sponsoring the trainee of the year award now for over 17 years and this year’s winner will be rewarded with a trip to the Golf Industry Show in Orlando, Florida.

Mr. Sullivan went on to say “We see the sponsorship of this award as a natural fit for our company and for Jacobsen. If we aren’t supporting the next generation superintendents in providing them with enough knowledge to surpass their predecessors, then we are effectively allowing our industry to die a slow death.”

Due to a high level of consistency across all aspect of the days testing, the title of Jacobsen / Power Turf Trainee of the Year for 2013 went to Tony Wood of the North Shore Golf Club who beat out his fellow trainees. Tony will be awarded his certificate at the National Conference in Hamilton in June.
